    Description

After the rise of the British East India Company and British hegemony in Indian, several Indian Princely States were allowed to coexist with British India. Though a series of treaties local Maharajas ruled semi autonomously alongside the British Raj. British Indian Princely States controlled about 2/3 of the Subcontinent and had varying degrees of Independence from the British Raj until the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947. Today the Indian Princely States are a distant historical memory of India’s past, and all that remains of them is a massive palaces (now converted into hotels), a few coins, stamps and scarce paper money issues like the one pictured here.
By far the most powerful, wealthy and independent Princely State was the Princely State of Hyderabad based in the South of India. Ruled by the powerful Nizams of Hyderabad, this Princely State evolved into a nation with its own independent military, currency and postal system, modern transportation system, university, and royal palace that the Nizam loved to boast was larger and more opulent then Queen Victoria’s Buckingham Place.
Up for auction today is a scarce, colorful,10 rupee paper money issue of Hyderabad. While this bank note is circulated and has a small worn hole in it, this note is still a colorful and affordable example of a scarce bank note from a “lost” nation. Only a few Princely States were given the blessing of the British to mint their own paper currency and this note was issued just before the nation was invaded by the Indian military in 1947 and made part of the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
